Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia was originally built as a Christian church between AD 532–537. Over time, as it transitioned into a mosque, much of the Christian iconography was covered—but many of the original mosaics are still visible today.

I’m not the best at recounting history, so I’ll leave the deep dive to Google—but I hope you enjoy these photos and get a sense of the beauty and layers of history within this incredible space.

When visiting mosques, women are required to cover their head and shoulders, and men should avoid wearing shorts. I brought along this beautiful shawl from my good friend Courtney at CB Grey. This particular design, called The Alice, is a collaboration between CB Grey and Alice Trahant Phillips. The vibrant pattern reflects the colorful, jewelry that Alice creates.

In addition to being a talented designer, Alice is also a respected art consultant. I’ve included links to both her site and CB Grey’s—take a moment to explore and learn more about these inspiring women.

Stay tuned for more!

XO,

Kristin
