Japanese Haori - Tangerine and White
A Haori is a traditional Japanese open front jacket measuring hip or thigh length. Evolving from samurai wear, it acts as a lightweight cardigan traditionally worn over kimonos, but here in the U.S. these are beautiful over jeans and a tee shirt or over a dress for fancier occasions. Like a kimono, they feature wide three-quarter sleeves and are one of a kind made from silk.
For this design, each small square was tied off by hand before dyeing — thousands of them. It's called kanoko shibori, after the spots on a fawn's back.
I purchased these in Takayama, a town that's been doing this kind of textile work since the early 1600's.
Measurements are 30" long and 46" around at the bust.
